what should you pay a web site designer for a simple website?
we have a small landscaping company and want to put signs
on our truck and direct people to our website. we have a web
site and it hasnt generated a single sale to date—the guy that
put it together for us wants 800 dollars again this year to service us. all it is is a single page with a picture of a display
we had at a trade show with a list of the things we do and
doesnt even have our phone number on it,,also if someone
were to try and contact us there is no way for us to capture
their contact information which i understand is one of the
major goals of a website and that usually happens when
you offer them a free booklet or newsletter,.
what should we do and how much should it cost?
search engines come next.

What are they servicing? Sounds totally useless to me.
Would you advertise in the yellowpages and not include your phone number?
From what your describing it’s a one and done site. $100-150 USD and the site is taken care of. I’m talking from scratch here, not something already current. That would be an hourly figure. Since nothing is changing it would be free.
If your talking the cost to host and maintain the domain:
GoDaddy total charge for a year would be about $60 USD.
To make a long story short he’s screwing you.
You can’t hire amatuers and expect results. Real designers cost thousands, but their web sites produce results that pay off. Consult a professional web designer with a degree in graphic art and tell them what you need.
I don’t have a specific answer, but have a couple of suggestions for you that should provide a very low cost solution. Many sites now offer web page hosting and provide a tool that you can use to create a simple page like you describe here. The tools are easy to use, they provide templates for you to start from if you wish, and it is included in the price. One such site is GoDaddy.com, and there are others. A do-it-yourself approach is used a lot by others like yourself now that the tools have been simplified, so look at this option first.
A second option is to put a description of what you want onto a bidding site like guru.com and let offshore resources bid on building the pages for you. They can build a few pages for much less than $800, as they typically charge $12/hour or less and work small jobs quickly.
Good luck.
that sucks. Microsoft Office Live lets u create your own website for FREE and its EASY and it looks better than many of the other free sites i’ve tried
you could post something on craigslist, and probably get someone to do it for $100. write up what you want on your website, and then post a job for it.
W S C gave the best answer.
You can create your own from Yahoo! for only $13/mth; I did but I also have webdesign experience. And as far as paying someone to handle one page at 800.00, this is highway robbery and I wouldn’t do it.
Make the necessary changes on your site. Incorporate the details and make it more attractive. You can get this done with a service provider on freelanc site. Register with freelance site and post your requirement in detail as a project. Discuss with the service provider and outsource the work to a potential programmer.
Since you pay thru escrow you will not pay the programmer till you get what you require.
